It was a fun-filled day. Not only were we at a great location with fantastic views and facilities, but we also had a wonderful potluck dinner with delicious food and drinks. The energy and spirit of the 11 mentees/exchange students and 22 mentors/alumni as they participated in the team building, karaoke and socializing activities was contagious. The highlight of the gathering for the mentors was the students treating us to a great performance of the HKU100 theme song. I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed the event as much as I did.

HKUAAO organized another hiking in the fall on October 6, 2013 at the Twyn Rivers trails in Scarborough. Because of rain forecast, a number of participants withdrew a day or two before the event. However, a very good number of 38 alumni, family, friends and exchange students from HKU still showed up. They were surprised that the day turned out to be dry, a little cloudy but cool – excellent for the walk. And they were rewarded with beautiful fall colors along the way. The walk took about three hours. The evening was wrapped up with a dinner at a restaurant in Markham with 28 people attending.

The HKU Global Alumni Reunion, co-organized by the HKUAA North California Chapter and co-ordinated by the HKU Development & Alumni Affairs Office, took place in the beautiful city of San Francisco, USA between September 18 to 22, 2013. HKUAAO was well represented in this major event by eight alumni traveling from Toronto.
The Reunion began with a cultural tour of the city of San Francisco. This was followed by a convention featuring talks by Professor LS Chan, Professor KB Luk and Professor SP Chow and a dialogue with Professor Lap-Chee Tsui. The Reunion dinner was held at the Hilton San Francisco Financial District Hotel. The highlight of the Reunion was a weekend geological tour to the Yosemite National Park led by Professor LS Chan, a renowned geologist. He acted not only as a guide to the major scenic locations but imparted insightful geological knowledge of the park. The final program of the Reunion was a visit to Napa Valley. There alumni attended a winery and were given a tour and a sampling of Napa Valley’s legendary wines.

The HKUAAO participated in the Hong Kong Joint Universities Alumni (Ontario) Table Tennis Tournament on that day. We supported the HKJU events by having more than 20 players and volunteers participating in the tournament.
After several rounds of high-level and exciting matches, we were the champion in the overall results and won the “Hong Kong Cup” sponsored by the HKETO. This was the second time we attained this highest status in two years. Apart from winning the “Hong Kong Cup”, we won the championship in Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles, first runner-up in the Mixed Doubles, and 2nd runner-up in the Mixed Doubles in the Group A events, the champion in Women’s Singles, the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up in the Mixed Doubles, and the 2nd runner-up in Men’s Doubles in the Group B events. The joys continued during the after-match dinner when players and organisers from all the 7 universities mingled together and enjoyed the singing and dancing performance.

May 19, 2013 Spring Hike – Terra Cotta, Caledon
The temperature was above average so our spring hike is a summer like event. Despite a warm day for journey to the west, our close to 30 people strong Terra Cotta Warrior Army comprising of our alumni, their families and friends had a great time trailing the woodland in Terra Cotta Conversation Area in the Halton Region. The route chosen presented an ease walk for all hikers, thanks to the scouting team. After hiking, half of the participants hung out together to join the dinner in Mississauga which is well planned with fine wine and delicious food to satisfy the taste buds. As always, all are eagerly looking forward to our Fall Hike.

The annual HKUAA Ontario AGM was held on March 24, 2013 at 5:45 pm at the Diamond Banquet Hall and Restaurant in Markham. All existing board members, except Lillian Poon and Ron Yeung, stood for election and were all re-elected. A new member, Frankie Cheng was also elected to the Board. Dennis Au-Yeung was nominated and unanimously elected by the new Board to be the Association’s President for 2013-2014. The AGM approved the establishment of an exchange scholarship for HKU to commemorate the centennial of our alma mater. The scholarship was to be funded by donations from alumni and friends with matching contributions from the Association for a total of HK$200,00 or approximately Canadian $26,000. The AGM approved the matching funding from the Association to come out from the fund pool other than that donated by Dr. Dexter Man which remained targeted for Chinese cultural heritage projects. The AGM approved the name of the scholarship to be “HKUAA Ontario Exchange Student Scholarship”. The AGM was immediately followed by the annual dinner. The dinner was attended by over eighty alumni, spouses, mentees, Joint U friends and representatives from OCDA. Our guest of honour, Mr. Stephen Siu, Assistant Director of HKETO, gave an interesting presentation of digital photography including many colorful illustrations. The highlight of the evening was the fund raising drive for the scholarship. With a very enthusiastic participation, the funds raised during the evening totaled $3,700. Including the previously pledged amount of $12,350, the total came to $16,050, well above our original target! Other programs of the evening included lucky draws and lively presentation by the interest group captains. Of course, what will a dinner be within sumptuous food!
