At the 71st Assembly of the Advanced Materials Congress (25 –27 August, 2026, Stockholm, Sweden), HKU Graduate and Mentor Professor Thomas Y T Wong 王騰廕 (BSc(Eng)-Elec 1975) was awarded the Charles K. Kao Medal by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), recognizing his contributions to semiconductor nanoparticles. His theoretical advancements have improved the characterization and design of nanostructures built with these particles.
Each year, IAAM names Researchers of the Year, inviting them to present at the Congress and awarding them medals named after landmark discoveries. Professor Wong’s speech, “Generalized electrical network functions for characterization of space charge interactions in semiconductor nanoparticles,” outlined his methodology for applying electrical engineering tools to model and design nanoparticle structures. These structures are particularly sensitive to terahertz electromagnetic waves—a spectral region increasingly studied thanks to new devices and detection technologies.
Professor Wong graduated with a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1975. He worked at Motorola Semiconductor (HK) Ltd., completed graduate studies at Northwestern University, and, after earning his PhD, joined Illinois Institute of Technology, where he is now an emeritus professor.
