Donation of Asia’s first world-class medical device to HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine – the Histotripsy Technology: a non-invasive, painless, highly efficient surgery for liver cancer
|
With a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, HKUMed will be the first institution in Asia to introduce the groundbreaking Histotripsy system, using state-of-the-art histotripsy technology for clinical trials, offering Hong Kong liver cancer patients access to non-invasive, painless and highly effective treatment. Ten patients will be sponsored by the Foundation to receive this novel treatment as part of the initial clinical trials to be conducted at Queen Mary Hospital.

Mr Li Ka-shing, Founder of the Foundation, “Killing cancer with bubbles is such a transformative technology. Advancing innovative medical research and its applications to ignite hope and spur economic growth in our society is critical to our future.”

To build on this momentum, the Liver Cancer Research Division will be established in the Centre for Cancer Medicine, HKUMed, the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

HKU Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship supports outstanding student-athletes
|
Since 2022, with the support from the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, a total of 20 top athletes have been awarded the “HKU Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship” for their dual-track development of sports and academics. This year, eight outstanding athletes are admitted to HKU via the “Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme” and have been awarded the “HKU Lee Shau Kee Top Athletes Scholarship” and the “Non-Academic Scholarship”, amounting to a total of HK$2.9 million.

2024 AsiaGlobal Fellows: 17 inspiring leaders from 16 countries
|
HKU Asia Global Institute welcomes 17 inspiring leaders to join the 2024 AsiaGlobal Fellows (AGF) Program. They include a parliament member from a Middle Eastern country, a chairperson of a national art council in Africa, a foreign policy director serving in the office of a European country’s president, and a champion of social justice and mental health who uses technology for the greater good in ASEAN.

Since its establishment in 2017 and with the support from the New World Group Charity Foundation and the Tanoto Foundation, the AsiaGlobal Fellows Program has nurtured 93 fellows from over 54 nations across all continents.
