The First in Hong Kong to retrieve Lunar Samples

HKU Geologists Team becomes First in Hong Kong to retrieve Lunar Samples

Dr Yuqi Qian, Dr Joseph Michalski and the team from Department of Earth Sciences obtained approval from the China National Space Administration's Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Centre to study the 822.6 milligrams lunar soil samples collected by the Chinese lunar probe Chang'e-5 (中國嫦娥五號) in 2020.

The lunar samples offer valuable insights into the Moon’s geological and thermal history and its connection to the formation and evolution of planetary bodies in the Solar System. The achievement by the HKU team underscores the university's growing contributions to China's lunar and planetary exploration efforts.

Why are museum collections important?

Why are museum collections important?

In a world where increasing information and data are now accessible online, natural history collections may appear as an archaism of a different century. It is just the contrary, however, as specimen-based collections are now more useful than ever.

A specimen represents a treasure of information from which one can extract a lot of data, and potentially even more so in the future Specimen collections, while sometimes perceived as dusty relics of the past, are in fact our biobanks of the future.  More

With over 50,000 specimens, the Hong Kong Biodiversity Museum 香港生物多樣性博物館 (HKBM) at HKU Faculty of Science is the first museum dedicated to the study and education of biodiversity in Hong Kong.
