合成化學不只是一個學術名詞，它的應用相當廣泛，好像抗生素、塑膠和用於 OLED 屏幕的發光物料等，也是合成化學的研究成果。合成化學國家重點實驗室 (香港大學) 於 2010 年由國家科技部批准成立，結集本港、內地和國際科研精英，研究範圍廣泛，包括研究對環境友善的催化氧化反應，開發新的發光材料，近年團隊更研發新的癌症化療藥，務求讓成果融入生活。

The State Key Laboratory of Synthetic Chemistry (HKU) aims to create or identify novel chemical entities that are either of fundamental interest in their structure and bonding, and/or with unique properties that have useful applications; and to devise/develop new methods, which should be environmentally friendly, for the synthesis of chemical entities of importance to society.
