In Memory
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh 一行禪師
Be still and breathe, and hold Thay in our hearts in peace
The University mourns the passing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh 一行禪師 (Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences) at the age of 95 on 22 January 2022.
Thay (‘teacher’ in Vietnamese as his friends and students would call him) was a world renowned Buddhist monk and Zen Master - a spiritual leader, peace activist, scholar, poet and writer. He dedicated his life to humanitarian work and world peace, and inspired us with his insightful comments on the miracle of life:
“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk on water or in thin air but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognise: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black curious eyes of a child. All are miracles.”
In his speech to members of the University, Thay explained: “The Sangha is a community where there is a brotherhood, sisterhood, harmony. And building the Sangha you have to devote a lot of time. A Family can be a Sangha, a university can be a Sangha. If there is brotherhood, mutual understanding, and love, we can achieve our goal and we can realize our dream.”
