26 June 2020 Open in web browser 2020 Tang Prize Laureate in Sinology
On behalf of the HKU Family, President Xiang Zhang congratulates Professor Wang Gungwu, former HKU Vice-Chancellor, on being awarded the Tang Prize for Sinology (唐獎漢學獎) for his pioneering work and contributions to the history of the Chinese world order, the Chinese overseas, and the Chinese migratory experience:
“ This is an honour that further strengthens the respect you command internationally as a distinguished historian and Sinologist —— discovering new knowledge and new ways of looking at identity and society, nation and community through the context of the Chinese diaspora.
In addition to being a world-renowned scholar, you are also an esteemed leader in global higher education. At the University, we recollect with gratitude and appreciation how your many visionary contributions, made during your Vice-Chancellorship, continue to support the University’s development today, and will go on doing so for generations to come. ”
“ As the leading historian on Sino-Southeast Asian relations, he (Professor Wang Gungwu) develops a unique approach to understanding China by scrutinizing its long and complex relation with its southern neighbors. His erudition and insight have significantly enriched the explanation of the Chinese people’s changing place in the world, traditionally developed from an internalist perspective or in relation to the West. ” The Tang Prize recognises contributors for their revolutionary efforts in four major fields: Sustainable Development, Biopharmaceutical Science, Sinology, and Rule of Law.
