<\/a>Joint Universities Year End Banquet and Talent Night 2014<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

This year the Hong Kong Joint Universities Alumni Ontario, led by the Lingnan University has successfully organised a Year End Banquet and Talent Night on October 18 at the Casa Victoria Fine Chinese Cuisine. Each of the 7 universities from Hong Kong performed a 10-minute talent show to compete for the Hong Kong Cup sponsored by the HKETO. Two members of our Karaoke Interest Group, namely Eddie Ho and Margaret Lau, performed karaoke singing on our behalf. It was a fun filling and enjoyable evening for over 200 participants. “HKUAAO organized a fall hike on Sunday, October 5, 2014 for its alumni, families, friends, and HKU exchange students.  As in previous years, there was a strong support for this function.  Forty eight registered for the hike and 36 for the dinner afterwards.  The trail we took wound along the Rouge River Valley which was very beautiful this time of the year with the changing of the season offering brilliant fall colors.  Weather was cool and comfortable.  It was a very enjoyable day for all as not only was this a chance to enjoy the Canadian outdoor but also an opportunity for the alumni and exchange students to interact and catch up with the developments in Hong Kong and Canada.”<\/p>\n

<\/a>May 18, 2014 Spring Hike Bruce Trail – Limehouse<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

“HKUAAO bid farewell to a long and cold winter by organizing a hike along a section of the Bruce Trail in the Halton Hills in Ontario on 18th May, 2014. The Bruce Trail winds along the Niagara Escarpment and in addition to the rustic scenery, this section passes through the Limehouse Conservation area where an abandoned limestone kiln can be seen.<\/p>\n
Thirty eight alumni, their families and friends attended the hiking which took about three hours to complete. Weather was comfortably cool with a mild sun. It was a very enjoyable hike with lots of pictures taken. All agreed it was a wonderful way to welcome spring.<\/p>\n
After the hiking, the evening was wound up with a dinner at a restaurant in Markham which was also very well attended.”<\/p>\n

<\/a>Mar 22, 2014 Annual Dinner & AGM<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The annual HKUAA Ontario AGM was held on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 5:40 pm at the Diamond Banquet Hall and Restaurant in Markham. All existing board members, except Elza Lee, stood for election and were all re-elected. A new member, Verdi Yau was also elected to the Board. The AGM was immediately followed by the annual dinner. The dinner was attended by over ninety alumni, spouses, mentees, and Joint U friends. Our guests of honour were Ms. Gloria Lo, Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and Drs Michael Lam and Ellen Leung. Ms. Lo gave a speech at the beginning of the dinner while Drs. Lam and Leung gave an interesting presentation of bird watching during the dinner. After the president\u2019s report presented by Dennis Au-Yeung, Augustine Chan and Tim Cheng reported the fundraising campaigns of the HKU Bricks Wall and the HKUAA Ontario Student Exchange Scholarship. Irene Chu, our Founding President then presented the duplicate brick to Dennis Au-Yeung. This duplicate brick would be kept with the president and would be passed to the future presidents as a presidential token. Other programs of the evening included a game, lucky draws and lively presentation by the interest group captains.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Mar 2, 2014 HKUAAO Table Tennis In-house Tournament<\/b><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Our HKUAAO Table Tennis Interest Group organized another in-house table tennis tournament and fun day on March 2, 2014 at the Canadian Chinese Table Tennis Association. Twenty four players participated in the tournament. The players were divided into 6 teams by random draw, and each team was identified by a bird\u2019s name. To add fun and spirit to the tournament, there was a Slogan Competition before the tournament commenced. The slogan must be related to the bird\u2019s name and the bird\u2019s color. Every team members dressed up like colorful birds and chanted their slogans during the competition.<\/p>\n
Same as previous tournament, the teams competed against each other in singles and doubles matches. Championship was determined by the highest total score. Apart from the prizes given to the champion, the 1st<\/sup> runner up and 2nd<\/sup> runner up teams, we added two new awards given to the Best Performance players and the Best Improvement players in each team. This was to encourage continuous improvement in the skills of our players.  After the matches, everyone was exhausted, but had an enjoyable time. The joys and laughter continued at the after-match dinner, during which prize presentation was held to the winners.<\/p>\n

We had 8 students (UofT, Waterloo University, York University, Western University) and 22 mentors\/alumni come out to the fun-filled event!
\nIt was a cold winter day, but our lively spirit heated up the party room. We all had a good time relaxing and socializing through karaoke, chess\/cards, and just conversing around a table.
\nWe rounded off the day with a team building game and a dinner with delicious food and drinks.<\/p>\n
