HKU Alumni Association New York Chapter (HKUAA-NY) celebrated an impressive victory at the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, securing first place in the Educational Invitational category! Led by Chapter President Philip Wong 王鷗 (BEcon) and Team Captain CP Kou 高展鵬 (BSc), alongside Henry Yim 嚴斯鶴 (BSc(ActuarSc)), the HKU New York Dragon Boat Team completed the race with a winning time of 1:42.40. They emerged victorious following a highly competitive race against teams from HKUST, CUNY, Columbia University, and CUHK.
While the trophy was a highlight, what made the day especially meaningful was seeing the HKU community in New York come together as a team. The victory was the result of extensive preparation, coordination, and team commitment, with members balancing busy New York lives to train and support one another in the lead-up to race day, truly showcasing “齊心就事成” (When we work with one heart, we can make things happen)
Special recognition was given to Team Captain CP Kou for his leadership and dedication in organising the team and managing behind-the-scenes operations. The chapter also expressed its gratitude to HKU for its generous sponsorship and support that helped make this experience possible.
“Dragon boat racing is a wonderful reminder that it is not about any one person paddling the hardest — it is about everyone finding the same rhythm, trusting one another and moving forward together. Thank you to everyone who paddled, practised, organised, supported and came out to cheer. The best part of the day was sharing it together. From Pok Fu Lam 薄扶林 to New York, the HKU spirit continues.”
