HKUEAA 40th Anniversary School Gala and Mega Sale (18 June 2016)

On 18th June 2016, HKUEAA and the Engineering Society of HKU co-organized the HKUEAA 40th Anniversary School Gala and Mega Sale at the University Campus. More than 200 alumni, students, families and friends gathered at our alma mater to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of HKUEAA and also to enjoy a fun and exciting weekend.

At the School Gala, we arranged a series of exciting activities, including game booths, lucky draws and mega sale of discounted products. In particular, we organized a Campus Orienteering Challenge for our alumni and their family members to explore the HKU campus and solve interesting puzzles. Moreover, a CLP Green Studio was stationed for all the participants to experience the new 4D movie about climate change and the importance of energy conservation.

The highlight of the event was the Time Capsule and Prize Presentation Ceremony. To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of HKUEAA, a time capsule was prepared to store items of significance, such as the booklet and photos of HKUEAA 40th Annual Dinner and Dance, a map of HKU campus, and messages written by all our Ex-Com members and engineering alumni. This time capsule was handed over to the Engineering Society of HKU and will be re-opened during the 45th Anniversary of HKUEAA.

Also at the Ceremony, our Guest of Honour Prof. Norman Tien, Dean of Engineering, presented prizes to the winning teams of the Campus Orienteering Challenge to reward their efforts and teamwork. It was then followed by a grand lucky draw, hosted by our President Ir Alfred Chan and Vice-President Ir Paul Poon.

The School Gala and Mega Sale was an exciting event filled with cheers and laughter. We sincerely thanks all guests and alumni for your support and participation!

CLP Career Series

With the generous support from CLPP, a career series with the theme of :Electrical & Mechanical engineering; was held by HKUEAA and the Faculty of Engineering, covering talks, technical visits and workshops, to arouse students・ interest in power industry and public utilities.

1-Day Technical Workshop in CLP Power HK Ltd Shatin Centre (9 March 2016)

The CLPP Shatin Centre mainly served as CLP power system training base where it provides all kinds of advanced training facilities such as cable jointing workshop, mini transmission training towers, and simulated substation etc. Students visited various facilities to learn more about power system・s operations. CLPP engineers not only taught technological knowledge but also introduced the importance of operational safety. Under supervision of field experts, students enjoyed their time gaining hands-on experience in operating switchgear and cutting electric cable.

1-Day Workshop in Castle Peak and Black Point Power Stations (16 March 2016)

Different from the previous CLPP visit in January 2016, this workshop provided students with hands-on experience in power station operations. Apart from plant tour, students visited the gas turbine repair workshop and received technical training. Students got more familiar with the work in power station after CLPP representatives・ sharing session about the challenges faced in daily operations and maintenance.

Technical Visit to Town Island (2 April 2016)

To understand the Hong Kong・s First Commercial Scale Standalone Renewable Energy System, students and alumni visited the first and second phase of the power supply project which was capable to lighting up 9600 compact fluorescent lamps. This :Zero emission; System could save an estimated 70,000kg of CO2. During the visit, CLPP representatives showed their professionalism in explaining the renewable energy generation and storage system and answering the curious queries. Students and alumni were very satisfied with the guided tour.

Technical Visit to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Projects V Hong Kong Link Road (9 March 2016)

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Projects consisted of a series of bridges and tunnels to connect the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province and Macao Special Administrative Region. In the visit, site engineers from Arup introduced the project background and part of the construction methods as well as the difficulties encountered in the project. Students also travelled on the sea to see the ongoing progress of the HZMB.

Technical Visit to HKEx Data Centre (16 April 2016)

Technical visit to Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (HKEx) Data Centre was held on 16 April 2016 for computer science and building services engineering students and alumni. The five-storey HKEx Data Centre in Tseung Kwan O consolidated the primary data centres for all of HKEx・s markets and served various functional cores including numerous data halls, building facilities operations, ancillary offices, canteen, recreational amenities, building management system as well as integrated physical security system.

HKEx Data Centre was also one of the most energy-efficient and green data centres in Asia which was awarded the LEED Gold Certificate. Before the guided tour, participants were briefed on its construction development, energy efficient design, facility management approach in a holistic view. After the briefing, visitors visited a variety of facilities in the data centre building and understood how the dedicated facility management team effectively operated the data centre. The visit was wrapped up by a fruitful sharing session between HKEx representatives and participants.

GMS Inauguration Ceremony 2016

The remarkable Inauguration Ceremony on 9 April 2016 was kicked off by an inspiring opening speech delivered by Ir Alfred W K CHAN, BBS (President of HKUEAA). Prof. Francis LAU (Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering) and Ms. Kasey LIN (Chairperson, ENS, HKUSU, Session 2015 V 2016) shared their views and expectation on the GMS 2016. Other guests of honours included Ms. Janet CHUNG (Director (Alumni) of DAAO HKU), Ir Y M CHAN (Vice-president of HKUEAA (Students Affairs), Session 2015 V 2016), and Ir W H LUK (Vice-president of HKUEAA (Alumni Affairs), Session 2015 V 2016), Ir Ken M K CHAN (Vice-president of HKUEAA (Administration and Finance), Session 2015 V 2016), Ir Paul W Y POON (Vice-president of HKUEAA (Event and Programme), Session 2015 V 2016).

Our privileged mentees have been enlightened and inspired by our mentors through their guidance, and well-equipped to face the challenges ahead because of the GMS. Over the past 16 years, more than 400 undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and fresh graduates have been benefited from the programme. We are happy to see some "old" mentees are now in return serving GMS as mentors, and/or helping with HKUEAA and other HKU functions.

After the ceremony, participants enthusiastically joined the tea gathering organized at the Postgraduate Hub in HKU Graduate House. All mentors and mentees had a fruitful and enjoyable afternoon. It was a great time for experience sharing between the mentors and mentees. Mentees surely had gained a lot through this precious moment. The event was successfully held and ended with joy.

Sustainable Development Study Tour 2016 - Japan
